Yep, you heard that right: Mae Martin wants to be James Bond. And we couldn’t be happier about it.
During an iHeartRadio Canada interview, the non-binary comedian spoke about their intentions to play the iconic British secret agent. Fans have, naturally, backed the cause entirely.
Speaking about the role, Mae said: “Well, I think we [need to] start some kind of serious petition. I don’t want people to think that this is ironic or tongue-in-cheek. This is serious: I would like to play Bond.”
They added: “He’d be sort of a feeble Bond. It’d be a different type of Bond than you’ve seen because he’d be kind of sweating and quivering, and he’d be crying. His main move would be slapping people.”
Last week, Mae released their new Netflix show Wayward, in which they play police officer Alex, who begins to dig into the local school for troubled teens. Speaking to Deadline, Mae revealed that it had been “juicy” to explore “heteronormative hypermasculinity” in the role of Alex. Maybe playing Bond could just be an extension of this?
With Daniel Craig stepping down from the iconic role, there’s definitely some scope for a new kind of Bond to take over. We’ve got our fingers crossed…
