The Women’s Euros kicked off on 2 July and will run until 27 July, meaning football season is well and truly afoot. Many DIVA readers were ecstatic to see England win the trophy back in 2022, the Lionesses certainly did us proud.

At the last Euros, France were knocked out at the semi-finals, but Les Bleues now have a new head coach, Laurent Bonadei, and are hoping for more luck this time around. Their squad has already been tipped as strong contenders and they will be facing the Lionesses today (5 July).

While interest in women’s football has been on the rise for people of all backgrounds, it’s long since gained the appreciation of lesbians and sapphics. We love to see the LGBTQIA+ visibility that the publicly out Lionesses are bringing to the pitch and it’s great to see they’re not the only team bringing queer rep to the game. So join us in taking a look at the out and proud members of the Les Bleues squad…

Pauline Peyraud-Magnin

Starting things off, we have to talk about the national team’s first openly gay player. She’s represented her country 64 times. She’s part of the French national team and is also a goalkeeper for Juventus in Italy. When she posted a photo of herself and her girlfriend back in 2020, she caused quite a buzz. She has been open about what it is like reading both the positive and negative responses to her sexuality and dating life.

Maëlle Lakrar

This defender has impressively been playing professional football since they were just 15 years old. Maëlle is also a defender for Liga F club Real Madrid and is sure to be a favourite among fans at this year’s competition.

They are also dating Canadian international Marie Levasseur, who plays for French side Montpellier. The two have publicly shared their love, like when they went on holiday together and posted this photo captioned: “Out of sight, close to heart”.

Constance Picaud

She has 13 international caps and is another goalkeeper for this year’s squad. She’s also a favourite among many LGBTQIA+ viewers as she’s offered proud visibility time and time again, from announcing her marriage to her wife back in 2021 to welcoming their first child, Anaë, together. Their bundle of joy has joined her mum at many events.
