This Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week, let’s celebrate a different kind of love

It’s a well-known fact in the queer community that there are so many kinds of love worthy of celebration. Friendships and chosen family are just as important as romance. With that in mind, this Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week, we’re celebrating three of our favourite queer friendships.

Leisha Hailey and Kate Moennig

From meeting when they both auditioned to be Shane McCutcheon on The L Word to writing a book together, we can’t get enough of the friendship between Leisha Hailey and Kate Moennig. The two have been best friends for years, remaining close after The L Word ended in 2009.

On Tig Notaro’s podcast, Don’t Ask Tig, Kate said: “We’ve just been through so much, and, you know, she stuck around me as well. So it just kind of trickles off the tongue. Best friend: Leisha Hailey.”

Elliot Page and Mae Martin

The friendship between these two is so strong, they even have matching tattoos of a coffee cup. The actors first met in a bar when they were 19, but it wasn’t until years later, when Elliot messaged Mae after watching their stand-up show, that they became friends.

Their friendship became even stronger when both Mae and Elliot were gearing up to tell the public about their gender journeys. Elliot messaged Mae before coming out as trans. “That was very inspiring and reassuring,” Mae told PinkNews. “It’s nice to have someone you can bounce off of who’s going through something similar.”

Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker

You just have to listen to the songs these three have written about each other to see how much they love each other. Each a successful musician in their own right, Phoebe, Lucy and Julien started off as fans of each other and then became friends whilst touring together. They later formed a supergroup called boygenius, which took the world by storm in 2022 and 2023.

When they embarked on a global tour, boygenius treated fans to a whirlwind of incredible moments, from taking the time to celebrate Phoebe’s birthday on stage to jumping into each other’s arms.
