After being delayed twice, the Critics’ Choice Awards finally happened over the weekend. The nominations were filled with queer actors and stories, so when they began, there was a good chance there would be a lot of queer wins too.
This chance turned into a reality on 7 February. Wicked and, despite recent controversies, Emilia Pérez both tied with The Substance for the most wins for a film, with three each. Similar happened for the television categories, as Hacks (also winning three awards) tied with Shōgun for the most awards.
Several more LGBTQIA films and shows won awards. Here are the top queer awards from the Critics’ Choice 2025:
Wicked wins three, including Best Director
The movie musical swept everyone away, including the critics! Wicked won one of the most coveted awards: Best Director. Unfortunately both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande went home empty handed, but the film also won Best Production Design and Best Costume Design.
At three awards, Wicked tied with The Substance and Emilia Pérez for the most film wins of the night. For Emilia Pérez, the critics awarded it Best Foreign Language Film, Best Original Song for El Mal and Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña.
Hacks wins three, including a Supporting Actress award for Hannah Einbinder
The third season of Hacks has been a bit of an awards darling, winning big at the Emmys last year as well. Hacks received the joint most awards in the TV categories: Best Comedy Series, Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Jean Smart and Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Hannah Einbinder.
Hannah used her speech to call out the fossil fuel industry for their role in the climate crisis: “The fossil fuel industry is to blame for the climate crisis and they need to pay to clean up the mess that they made.”
Baby Reindeer wins two awards, including a Supporting Actress award for Jessica Gunning
Baby Reindeer has been another awards darling, as has Jessica Gunning. The actor took home one of two awards for Baby Reindeer, the other being the award for Best Limited Series. Jessica won the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series.
The British actor dedicated her award to Baby Reindeer’s writer and star Richard Gadd, saying he “changed her life” when he chose her to play Martha, a fictionalised version of his stalker.

Maisy Stella wins Best Young Actor for My Old Ass
The 21 year-old Canadian actor was incredible in My Old Ass so this was definitely deserved. The film saw Maisy star as Elliott, a teenager who meets her older self as she prepares to head off to university.
