Laverne Cox is all set to star as a trans woman who reunites with her estranged father in Prime Video’s Clean Slate. The actor, known for Orange Is The New Black and Inventing Anna, also created the comedy series, which will be available to stream from 5 February.

The show will follow Desiree, a proud trans woman who reconnects with her father, Harry (George Wallace), 23 years after they last saw each other. When Desiree’s art gallery loses its funding, she ends up staying with her father in Alabama. While there, she tries to help her closeted best friend (D. K. Uzoukwu), the local choir director, ultimately finding herself at the centre of church gossip.

Laverne has long been a trailblazer in the LGBTQIA community and has redefined what it means to be a successful trans woman in Hollywood. She made history as the first openly trans person nominated in the acting categories of the Primetime Emmys, and to appear on the cover of Time magazine. She has also tirelessly campaigned for trans rights.

Following Trump’s election victory, the 52-year-old admitted that she broke down in tears when it became clear he had won. “I don’t want to be in too much fear, but I’m scared. As a public figure, with all my privilege, I’m scared, and I’m particularly scared because I’m a public figure. I feel like I could be targeted. I think they spent close to $100 million on anti-trans ads. It’s deeply concerning.”
