It’s the most wonderful time of the year, especially because we can rewatch the sapphic masterpiece Happiest Season as many times as we want. Directed by icon Clea DuVall, this Xmas favourite has been captivating sapphics since its release in 2020.

Happiest Season follows Abby (Kristen Stewart) as she plans to propose to her girlfriend Harper (Mackenzie Davis) during Harper’s family Christmas visit. However, Harper hasn’t come out to her conservative family, creating tension and comedic drama.

It’s been four years since this cult classic came onto our screens. Let’s see what the cast has been up to since then.

Kristen Stewart

KStew has been a queer icon ever since she came out on SNL in 2017 in her famous monologue directed at Donald Trump. In Happiest Season she took on the role of Abby, a romantic sapphic ready to propose to her girlfriend Harper. There’s only one problem: it turns out Harper isn’t out to her family. Since then Kristen has reached even more acclaim in her acting career with roles in films like Spencer. She also starred in the sapphic thriller of 2024 Love Lies Bleeding, which pretty much sent us all into a frenzy.

Mackenzie Davies

Harper, torn between her love for Abby and fear of revealing her sexuality to her conservative family, was played by none-other-than Mackenzie Davies. Since starring in the festive film, Mackenzie has gone on to star in the HBO mini series Station Eleven, the captivating drama Swimming Home, and the thriller Speak No Evil.

Aubrey Plaza

Aubrey Plaza is continually the gift that keeps on giving to the LGBTQIA community. In Happiest Season, the queer icon took on the role of Riley – Harper’s ex-girlfriend who understood all too well the issues Abby was having. Since the film, Aubrey has starred in an abundance of films and shows, including the queer cult classic The White Lotus and the bisexual coming-of-age story My Old Ass. Fans everywhere practically lost their minds when she became one-half of the MCU’s first-ever sapphic kiss in Agatha All Along earlier this year.

Mary Holland

Jane, played by Mary Holland, provided us with some subtle comic relief as Harper’s quirky and creative sister often overlooked by her family. Since starring in Happiest Season, Mary has been busy on a number of projects including Senior Year with Rebel Wilson and the American adaptation of the BBC show Ghosts.

Alison Brie

Harper’s competitive and seemingly perfect older sister Sloane was played by bisexual icon Alison Brie. After Happiest Season, Alison has gone on to do voice acting in a number of shows including Rick And Morty, as well as starring in films like Somebody I Used To Know and Freelance.

Dan Levy

Schitt’s Creek’s Dan Levy also appeared in this Christmas classic as Abby’s witty and supportive best friend John. Since the film, Dan has starred and produced the powerful queer release Good Grief which came out in 2023. He also starred in the beloved LGBTQIA Netflix show Sex Education.
