Christmas is supposed to be a magical time of year, but for many LGBTQIA people, it’s anything but. Many feel forced back into the closet, as they spend time with the people who should support them the most, but too often don’t. Far from wonderful, the holiday period can be incredibly difficult. But, this year, you can help make the festive season a bit brighter by donating to Trans Secret Santa UK.
Trans Secret Santa UK was launched last year by Think2Speak in partnership with Jude Guaitamacchi and Octavian Starr. Now, it has kicked off its 2024 campaign to raise funds to deliver gifts to trans youth across the country. The first campaign saw almost 700 presents distributed and this year’s aims to reach even more to ensure trans kids feel celebrated and supported during Christmas.
The money raised will go towards carefully selected gifts, each accompanied by a Christmas card featuring messages of love and support from prominent trans figures. Donations can be made directly via the website or by buying merch. The merch, consisting of clothing, mugs and bags, have been designed by several high-profile people, including Drag Race’s Banksie and Married At First Sight UK’s first trans bride Ella Morgan.
The campaign has been backed by lots of celebrities, including Michelle Visage, Emmerdale’s Matty Barton, Ash Palmisciano and activist Maxine Heron. The message of this year’s campaign is “Trans youth you are loved”.
Lizzie Jordan, co-founder of Trans Secret Santa UK, reflected on the importance of the campaign, saying: “The holiday season can be a difficult time for many LGBTQ+ youth, especially those in the trans community who may feel marginalised. Our goal is to bring some light into their lives, to remind them they are seen, valued, and loved. We’re excited to be expanding our reach this year and are grateful for the generosity of all who make this possible.”
To get a gift, trans young people (under 25s) can register on the campaign’s website. A 2023 gift recipient said: “Receiving a gift from Trans Secret Santa meant the world to me. It wasn’t just the present but knowing there are people out there who truly care. The card and message made me feel like I belong, and that is the best gift anyone could give.”
Fundraising items are on sale at Everpress until 9 December and trans young people can register for a gift via Trans Secret Santa UK until 6 December.
