Great news for queer film fans – the BFI has announced its dates for 2025’s largest queer film event, BFI Flare. The LGBTQIA film festival, which screens the best of queer cinema from around the world, will run from 19-30 March at BFI Southbank.

This is the 11th year the festival will put on #FiveFilmsForFreedom, an initiative that presents five free to watch films and encourages everyone everywhere to show solidarity with LGBTQIA communities in countries where their rights are limited. In the UK, these can be watched on BFI Player.

The 2024 edition spanned the Philippines, India, Spain, USA and UK and the digital campaign attracted over 3 million views. Since 2015, when #FiveFilmsForFreedom first began, the initiative has been viewed by 26 million people, in over 200 countries.

Submissions for the 2025 edition of the festival are open. They can be made via the BFI website and by 6 December. Further details about the application process will be available in the coming months.
