1 October marks the start of Black History Month in the UK. This is a time for reflection and appreciation of the overwhelming contributions that the Black community have made. From music and fashion to science and politics, Black thinkers and creators have enriched every aspect of our lives.

There are so many ways to elevate Black voices and engaging with their content is an easy and effective way to do so. Keep reading to find out more about a few of our faves!

@wendysworld_xox (she/her)

Wendy Asumadu’s experimental makeup looks are simply works of art. Her career as a content creator began in pursuit of bringing some much-needed diversity to the online makeup scene – we are so grateful she did! Her short-form content shows how she uses the brightest colours and unconventional techniques to make amazing looks. As a proud bisexual woman, she also uses her platform to advocate for LGBTQIA representation.

Looking for your next read? Head to Lyza’s account. Her page is filled with reviews and recommendations of books written by POC authors. With a focus on LGBTQIA literature (both fiction and non-fiction), her page deserves an instant follow from all queer bookworms. Lyza picks perfect seasonal reads for her completely free book club. It couldn’t be easier to diversify your bookshelf!

@solanathagreenfairy / @littlemisssolana (she/her)

With over 600k on TikTok, Solana’s posts about her queerness, activism and music are remarkable. Her political commentaries are delivered with authenticity and empathy, making her a trusted voice in left-wing online spaces. Some of her most viral videos are from interviewing protesters at pro-Palestine marches, with one interviewee being Jeremy Corbyn. Alongside these political videos, she shares content about her journey of queerness and often posts sweet videos of her and her girlfriend.

@kenna_bethany (she/her)

Actress and TikTok personality Kenna Bethany makes videos about queer dating, sex and her experiences as a person with autism. Through short skits and longer, more detailed videos, she also speaks about ethical non-monogamy and what that looks like for her. With lots of Pride and LGBTQIA nightlife content, her account is a perfect how-to guide to navigating queer life in London.

@teenoir (she/her)

If you’re looking to learn more about Black womanhood, pop culture and sociological commentary, Tee Noir’s YouTube channel is the first place to check out. Every one of her video essays is well-researched and peppered with her own queer, Black experiences, making every watch as informative as the last. Modern television, film and music are analysed, and often rightfully critiqued, through her Black feminist lens. She also has a Patreon you can donate to and get exclusive access to new content – all while supporting an amazing creator!

@theahallow (she/they)

With glistening grills and a killer wardrobe, Thea Hallow’s fashion sense is enough of a reason to follow them. The I Kissed A Girl star has released two new songs since leaving the Masseria, with Safe Space having a gorgeously retro-inspired music video. Often posting about their sapphic love songs, they consistently speak up about the need for LGBTQIA representation in the music industry on TikTok.

@tanaka.fuego (he/they)

Poet, activist and proud Local Dyke Tanaka Fuego has been praised for the stark honesty he writes about in his work. His spoken word pieces, one most notably given at Trans+ Pride London 2024, are inspired by his queer life. Being Black, trans and queer, he aims to diversify trans media and does so by writing and performing pieces about the uncomfortable realities of poverty and dysphoria. On Instagram, they post segments of their powerful performances and musings on their queerness.

DIVA magazine celebrates 30 years in print in 2024. If you like what we do, then get behind LGBTQIA media and keep us going for another generation. Your support is invaluable.
