You may know Hunter Schafer from her impressive acting credits such as The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes or Euphoria, but did you know that this beloved star made headlines even before she became an actor?
Brush up on your facts about Hunter before her newest film Cuckoo hits UK cinemas on 23 August.
She’s an artist
The 25-year-old actor studied visual art at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and contributed drawings and paintings to Rookie Mag from 2015 to 2018. She often uses watercolour and ink to create pieces which she occasionally posts on Instagram.
Euphoria was her first acting role
Hunter was actually planning on studying fashion design at London’s Central Saint Martins before she saw a casting call for the show on Instagram. She told Entertainment Weekly that she had “not acted before [Euphoria] and was not planning on it either”. But with the help of an acting coach she “fell in love with the script and acting”.
She dated musician and co-star Dominic Fike
The pair reportedly fell in love on the Euphoria season two set and dated from January 2022 to July 2023 with Schafer recently revealing that the relationship ended due to Dominic cheating. She told the Call Me Daddy podcast that she was once “head over heels” for Dominic, until she checked through his phone and discovered he was unfaithful.
Musicians are clearly her type, as earlier this year Hunter revealed that she also dated Rosalía
The Euphoria star said that despite splitting romantically, she still views the DESPECHÁ singer as “family”
Hunter started her transition when she was 14
Hunter is a trans woman and started her transition as a freshman, with the support of her family — including her father, who is a pastor. In an interview from 2016, Hunter discussed how she was diagnosed with gender dysphoria due to the anxiety surrounding her hormonal changes and emotional identification during puberty. She said her parents were hesitant at first but said she is fortunate to have such a supportive family.
