Brighton’s Helm Gallery has announced its new exhibition Lavender Boy, the first-ever gallery collection of drag portraiture by renowned photographer Greg Bailey. The exhibition will run throughout August.
Featuring icons like Jinkx Monsoon, Juno Birch, Amanda Lepore, Shea Couleé and Don One, Lavender Boy shines a light on the beauty of drag and represents Greg’s own personal journey. Utilising the colour of lavender – and its symbolic role within queer history – this new collection is an ode to the power of queer art forms.
The new exhibition at the Helm Gallery will feature one new portrait – Drag King Don One. This portrait marks the only Drag King to be featured in the exhibition.
Greg Bailey commented: “Working with Kings, non-binary performers, the trans community, the lesbian community and more people of colour is the direction I want to take my work, as these communities haven’t had as much attention as I believe they deserve – they are just as impressive, glamorous, and talented as their Drag Queen counterparts”
Eden Maseyk, co-founder of the Helm Gallery, added: “The way he captures such a rarely seen side of queer culture is astonishing – he was an instant favourite with us at Helm. His work simultaneously conveys the grit, glam, humour and elegance of such a storied form of expression. Each work has incredible context. Greg is an undeniable rising star.”
