Jessica Gunning, who recently has taken the whole world by storm with her portrayal of Martha in the Netflix show Baby Reindeer, has spoken about her sexuality for the first time on the podcast Reign With Josh Smith. Speaking candidly, Jessica marked the beginning of Pride Month by talking about her own coming-out journey.
“I came out in November 2022. And that was a mega, mega thing for me,” she said, as reported by the Daily Mail. “I still can’t articulate it in the best way. But I realised I was a big, old gay. I was like, ‘That’s what it’s been, that’s what it is’. And that was like a massive moment where everything kind of clicked and I made sense of myself then.”
LGBTQIA audiences may know Jessica from the 2014 film Pride which told the story of a group of queer activists who helped the miners during their strike in the 1980s.
Jessica went on to say on the Reign podcast that there were many times in her life when she noticed signs that she could be part of the LGBTQIA community, notably when she kissed Cate Blanchett in the National Theatre production of When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other or when she watched The L Word.
She continued saying that throughout her life she felt like an “alien”, but had always put it down to the fact that she was a “bigger woman”.
“But as soon as I realised, I was like ‘No, it’s that’, and that was like the most liberating thing,” she added.
Her starring role in Baby Reindeer has earned Jessica acclaim worldwide. The show tells the real-life story of Richard Gadd who was stalked by a woman named “Martha”. You can watch the full series on Netflix.
