Director and co-founder of Queer Britain Joseph Galliano-Doig MBE has announced today (16 May) that he will be stepping down from his role at Queer Britain. The UK’s first dedicated LGBTQIA museum was founded in 2018, and opened its doors in 2022 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the UK’s first gay pride march.

Having welcomed over 80,000 visitors, and held a number of groundbreaking and important events, Queer Britain has become a home for preserving and celebrating LGBTQIA culture and history.

Joseph Galliano-Doig MBE said: “It is time for me to hand the baton on to a new leader to take Queer Britain to its next stage of growth with a fresh burst of energy, and for me to find my next exciting career challenge.”

“Creating the UK’s first and only physical LGBTQIA museum from scratch has been the crowning pride of my career and life. Every day I hear stories about how much Queer Britain and its mission means and I am filled with gratitude.”

He continued: “However, the museum has always been bigger than any individual and we have built a highly effective, passionate and skilled team and Boards that fill me with confidence that it no longer needs its campaigning Co-Founder at the helm.”

Thanking the Chair, the Board, the communities and people who have supported Queer Britain, and his husband Mark, Joseph said that is “so excited to see its future”.

“I will always be cheering from the sidelines, and will volunteer and advocate for the museum in any way I can,” he promised.

“Thank you all for being part of this amazing journey. Together, we have made history and shown that when we work together as communities and when we focus on welcoming all of our friends, families and allies, in all our glorious diversity, we can achieve anything.”

Ian Mehrtens, Co-Founder and Chair, and the Board have begun to recruit a new director for Queer Britain.

Joseph was awarded an MBE for services to Heritage, to Charity, and to Diversity and Inclusion in the 2024 New Year’s Honours List.
