South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM) has announced its 2024 theme to share, celebrate, and educate about the vibrancy of South Asian heritage: Free To Be Me. Marking the fifth year of their celebration, SAHM will run from 18 July to 17 August.
The first ever SAHM took place in 2020, creating a space to commemorate, mark and celebrate South Asian cultures, histories, and communities.
This year’s theme will serve as a call to action for everyone to express their identities, experiences, and cultural richness. You can celebrate through a variety of mediums from storytelling, art, dialogue, or a celebration.
How can you get involved?
- Plan Events & Gatherings. Organise or attend cultural showcases, discussions, and educational seminars. These can be uploaded to the SAHM event list on their website.
- Create artwork, musical compositions, and writings that resonate with the theme of Free To Be Me. Tag SAHM on social media, and you can upload your stories to their website.
- Engage with Community. Reach out to local and online communities to plan collaborative events.
- Raise Awareness. Use your voice and platform to raise awareness about the upcoming month and its significance.
