The Grammys are one of the most exciting nights in the music industry’s calendar. All of the biggest stars come together to celebrate some of the best albums, records, and music videos of the past year. This year’s 66th Grammys was no different.
From a surprise performance by Tracy Chapman to boygenius taking home not one but three Grammys, this year’s awards show was packed full of queer goodness. Here’s your rundown of all the best LGBTQIA moments from the 2024 Grammys!
Taylor Swift made history by winning Album Of The Year
In true Taylor Swift fashion, she made history by just entering the room. Before this year’s ceremony, Taylor was tied for three Album Of The Year wins with Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder. However, her album Midnights took her to new heights as she became the first artist in history to win four Album Of The Year awards.
Miley Cyrus took home a Grammy for Flowers
Queer icon Miley Cyrus looked absolutely thrilled when she took home the prestigious Record Of The Year Grammy for her hit song Flowers. In her acceptance speech, she said: “This award is amazing. But I really hope that it doesn’t change anything because my life was beautiful yesterday. Not everyone in the world will get a Grammy, but everyone in this world is spectacular.”
In her performance of the song, she called out the crowd saying: “Why are you acting like you don’t know this song?”
Billie’s Barbie reign continues with Song Of The Year
The What Was I Made For star continued her amazing awards season by picking up the Grammys for Song Of The Year and Best Song Written For Visual Media. Billie thanked her brother and Greta Gerwig for “making the best movie of the year”.
Victoria Monét was crowned Best New Artist and Best R&B Album
We know that everyone felt like a proud parent when Victoria Monét bagged not just one but two Grammys at the awards show. “My roots have been growing underneath ground, unseen, for so long, and I feel like today I’m sprouting, finally above ground,” she said in her powerful acceptance speech.
Padam Padam beat out Troye Sivan for Best Pop Dance Recording
The LGBTQIA hit song Padam Padam got its recognition at the Grammys for Best Pop Dance Recording. The track earned Kylie her second-ever Grammy. On the red carpet, Kylie expressed her love for the LGBTQIA community to Laverne Cox. “I would say thank you for being with me for such a long time now, through thick and thin,” she said.
“We ride the highs, the lows and the in-betweens, and to know that we’ve got each other’s backs, and this feels like the start of the next era.”
boygenius took home Best Rock Song and Best Alternative Music Album
Composed of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus, boygenius has had quite the year. After releasing their highly anticipated album The Record, the trio have delighted LGBTQIA fans everywhere with their antics on tour. The band took home the Best Rock Song for Not Strong Enough and Best Alternative Music Album.
“All I ever wanted to do in my life was be in a band. I feel like music is the language I used to find my family since I was a kid. I just wanna say thank you to everybody who ever watched me play and these guys for touring in a freaking van and a Prius,” Julien said during their acceptance speech.
Phoebe added: “I owe these boys everything. I love you guys so much; you’re the best.”
Fantasia Barrino performed Proud Mary
The Color Purple star Fantasia Barrino honoured the queer icon Tina Turner who passed away last year by performing Proud Mary. The unforgettable performance left the whole crowd with goosebumps as they remembered the power of the late singer.
Tracy Chapman made a rare live performance
We absolutely couldn’t believe our eyes when Tracy Chapman came out on stage holding her guitar once again. The Fast Car singer was joined by Luke Combs for an emotional performance of her greatest hit. It’s safe to say that everyone in the room was quickly on their feet.
