If you are an LGBTQIA woman or non-binary person, you probably know who Marie Ulven Ringheim, better known as girl in red, is. After all, her music is responsible for so many of our gay awakenings. So much so that saying “Do you listen to girl in red” became a way of discreetly asking someone if they were queer.

Music aside, what else do you know about the musician? Here are five things you probably didn’t know about the singer-songwriter who is arguably Norway’s biggest celesbian.

Her grandfather inspired her to take up music

She revealed in an interview with Triple J that it was her grandfather, who played guitar and piano, who inspired her to start learning to play musical instruments. Lesbians and sapphics around the world have a lot to thank him for!

Fingerboarding (riding a mini skateboard with your fingers) is one of her favourite hobbies

Here she is competing in a “fingerboarding battle” as a teenager. Looks pretty gay – how do we join?

Her stage name has an incredibly queer origins story

According to Marie, the name originates from when she realised she was in love with her best friend and tried to find her at a concert. She spotted her wearing a red sweater and texted her the words “girl in red”. Nothing came of it, but the words “girl in red” stuck with Marie, and she started using it as the name under which she released music.

Marie is a huge fan of Taylor Swift

She was even a supporting act for some US shows of the Eras Tour in 2023. Gotta love her being a Swifty.

She initially wanted to become a teacher

Marie never truly considered making music professionally, she said in an interview with Paper magazine and thought of it as a hobby instead. It was much later on in her teenage years that she realised she wanted to become a professional musician.
