Ethan Coen and his wife Tricia Cooke spoke about the process of creating the highly anticipated queer comedy filmĀ

Like most of the sapphic world, we canāt wait to watch Ethan Coenās highly anticipated film Drive Away Dolls. Following two queer friends ā played by Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan ā the film watches as an impromptu road trip after a bad breakup soon goes south when the pair meet a group of criminals.
Queer icons like Beanie Feldstein (Booksmart), Pedro Pascal, and Colman Domingo are all starring in this hit comedy. We now have even more reason to be excited after Ethan revealed that the idea came from his wife Tricia Cooke ā who identifies as a lesbian ā in a recent interview with Empire magazine.
āNeither of us was going to make a mopey lesbian movie, not being capable of that,ā Ethan explained in reference to the film, which apparently has been in the works for the last 20 years. āThere are movies about the pain of being gay. That can be a good movie or a bad movie, like any other, but that is not something we were going to do. We have people for that.ā
Tricia, who describes her marriage with Ethan as being āunconventionalā, continued by saying: āWe had written it as a lesbian movie, and the queer world is a lot broader now, so we felt it would be dated if we made it more contemporary.āĀ
āBack then [when we began planning the film] we wanted to make a genre movie, because we lacked those in the LGBT world. There really werenāt a lot of comedies for the queer world; still arenāt.ā
Audiences have seen a renaissance of lesbian comedies over the last few years, with the likes of BottomsĀ (2023) and even the recent remake ofĀ Mean GirlsĀ (2024).Ā
Drive Away Dolls will be available in UK cinemas on 15 March.Ā
