Drop everything! If you haven’t already recovered from the festive joy that Happiest Season brought at the weekend, you might need to take a seat for this. Director Clea DuVall herself has now said that she is open to the idea of a sequel.

In a new interview with Variety, Clea speaks all about what she thinks of viewers’ reactions to the film and even drops a hint that there could be a sequel further down the line if she has things her way.

If you’ve been living under a rock, you might not be familiar with this festive romcom starring Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis as couple Abby and Harper.

We meet the couple as they prepare for Abby to meet Harper’s parents for the first time at their big annual Christmas get together.

That’s enough pressure in itself, but Abby also plans to propose to her girlfriend during the occasion. The only problem is that Harper’s family doesn’t even know that she is gay, leading Abby to begin to question the girlfriend she thought she knew so well.

In the brand new interview, Clea opens up about what she hoped the film would achieve.

“All I really was hoping for is that it would give studios or streamers the impression that movies like this have an audience, and that people want to see them. I just wanted to do a good enough job that I would get to make more on a larger scale. That LGBTQ stories would be — you know, that there would be more of them!”

Its premiere at the weekend broke records for streaming service Hulu which is not surprising judging by the amount of times we saw people tweeting about it. It scored the best viewership for any original film on the service in its opening weekend, and striated more new subscribers than any other previous feature title.

When asked if she would like to create a sequel, she says yes and adds: “I mean, I have a couple of ideas. We all had such a great time making the movie that we were talking about it then. But it was also just like, who knew if anybody would care about the movie or not? So I definitely am more than open to it.”

I think we can confirm we absolutely care and are already dreaming of the day the Happiest Season sequel is announced. 🎄
