Girl Crush is the latest single from London-based duo CATBEAR, and it’s a catchy synth-pop anthem for anyone who’s ever longed for more than just a friendship. So, it’s ultimately relatable for every single one of us.
If you’re anything like CATBEAR, all that time in lockdown has got you thinking about the could-have-beens and what ifs. With big 80s synths and singalong melodies, Girl Crush speaks the words you’re too shy to say out loud. With CATBEAR’s familiar retro-synth-pop sounds and nostalgic beats, this is the perfect accompaniment to a lazy, late-summer afternoon indulgently dreaming about your forbidden love.
CATBEAR are a queer duo (Zoe Konez and Sarah Smith) making dreamy pop in their bedrooms. Girl Crush is their fourth single since their reincarnation from indie guitar band Cat Bear Tree to a more electronic sound in late 2018. Determined to make the most of quarantine and after a quick swap of recording gear in socially distant garden meet-ups, this new single was recorded in true DIY style. Sarah laid down her vocals in her spare room wardrobe whilst Zoe recorded and produced in her home studio in Brixton, London.
The duo explained: “We made this single from home and actually the quiet streets of Lockdown London and the amazing weather we had influenced the summery chilled vibe on this song. We were listening to a lot of 80s and 90s alternative pop but also loving the current pop sound of Caroline Polachek, The Japanese House and Rina Sawayama.”
