UK NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANISATION ‘LGBTQ+ DISABLED QUEER AND HEAR’ LAUNCHES UK’S FIRST VIRTUAL PRIDE EVENT FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
The first pride event for LGBTQ+ people with disabilities will open on Saturday 22nd August at 13:00 via YouTube, allowing for the first time a celebration of uniqueness and diversity within an often-forgotten part of the LGBTQ+ community.
‘LGBTQ+ Disabled Queer and Hear: Virtual Pride’ is four-hour-long event that will showcase the talents of drag queens, poets, singers, and other performers with disabilities who also identify as LGBTQ+.
Wayne Allington, founder and managing director of LGBTQ+ Disabled Queer and Hear says: “We are putting ourselves out there in the community, the whole reason for this online pride is for people with disabilities in the LGBTQ+ community to have a pride of their own. Everything is meant to be inclusive, but we are being left behind in so many ways. We want to be the gamechanger, to make it work.”
The event will be hosted by lesbian icon and host of last year’s DIVA stage at London Pride host Saski, who said
“I’m really excited to host this event! Equality is about everyone having fair access to the same opportunities, and this brand new event will showcase some of the best UK acts from the LGBTQ+ disabled community. It’s important that everyone has the opportunity to shine!”
“People – venues and promoters – are not looking hard enough for artists with disabilities”, added Allington. “Our event will push talented LGBTQ+ people with disabilities into the spotlight. People will see that we can have fun, we can do amazing things. We’re here, we’re queer, and we can do this.”
