Poet and activist Lisa Luxx celebrates International Women’s Day 2019 with the release of her debut single, Girl Gang

Girl Gang – aka the sisterhood song – is a celebration of female friendships everywhere by British-Syrian artist Lisa Luxx, and we are loving it.
Made up of footage collected from sisterhoods from the UK, Nambia, Senegal, California, Beirut, across Canada, mainland Europe, Australia and beyond the video is worth a watch based on this fact alone.
There are contributions from womxn including Grace Neutral, Yasmin Abdel Magied, Suki Waterhouse and so many other recognisable faces who champion women and their bonds to one another.
It’s practically a one stop shop of who’s who in the world of intersectional feminism.
Luxx, who’s featured in DIVA a few times over the years, was inspired to write the song after recognising the energy and joy she found in the likes of women artists like Princess Nokia and Beyoncé during her first Women’s March.
“We’ve been through a lot and women are working so hard on building a better world, so the least we deserve is to dance through the uprising.”
We couldn’t agree more, Lisa.
An artist whose electric, live poetry performances have been called “sensitive and revolutionary – always kind, always fierce” by Dazed magazine, Luxx is a poet, performer, writer and fighter by trade and has headlined shows at the Royal Albert Hall and performed for the UN Women’s #HeForShe campaign.
She’s even done a TEDx talk (we’re pretty sure she’s superwoman).
Her debut book, Polyphonic Scars, was released in 2015 and placed Luxx in a generation of contemporary poets, including Kate Tempest, who are combining performance and verse with beats and hip hop resulting in an honest, bruised directness.
Developing her work into what she calls “lo-fi filmmaking” in a new wave of multi-disciplinary presentation for poetry and music, Luxx is currently also writing her debut novel.
