LGBTQIA+-led, this winter break is perfect for a reset
BY ELLA GAUCI
Are you suffering from the winter blues? Looking for an escape, a place to reset or simply just connect to a new area? Look no further than bnb-side on the Isle of Portland, which is hosting its brand new winter creative retreats.
LGBTQIA+-led and founded, these creative winter retreats take place on the Isle of Portland, a craggy and beautifully unique island located south of Weymouth. Though small, Portland has been central to both the natural and human world throughout history. Whether it be for its infamous Portland Stone or hosting the 2012 Olympic sailing, Portland’s legacy is as ever-changing as its coastline.

Now, b-side, an arts organisation on the island, is hoping to offer Portland as a refuge for artists everywhere with their new winter creative retreats. Previously, b-side has worked with artists around the world for their b-side festival which brings artists and communities together to tell the unique, powerful, and often joy-filled stories of Portland – stories they resonate locally and globally. The organisation also opened their BnB – bnb-side – where their LGBTQIA+ group meet regularly.
DIVA took a trip to Portland to learn more about b-side’s new creative retreats.
What does the winter creative retreat include?
Think rugged coastlines, pizza-making with five strangers, and pottery. These are just a few of the different activities that retreat guests will experience in bnb-side. Each retreat is curated to spotlight local artists, offering each group of guests a completely unique experience.

For mine, I enjoyed a pizza-making masterclass at the Modern Folk Bakery, a trip to Tout Quarry before a session of pottery with Stephen Yates, a guided tour of Portland’s many plants with herbalist Andrew Cowling, and a kiln glass workshop with Emma Bradley. All activities are optional, and there is plenty of time to bond with the other retreat guests over dinners and downtime at bnb-side.

Accommodation and food are included in the price, with your lovely host Cat ensuring that the weekend runs smoothly.
Is b-side and the Isle of Portland LGBTQIA+ friendly?
Yes! Upon arrival, b-side director Rocca Holly-Nambi was quick to showcase the island’s queer library located next to bnb-side. I met with members of Portland’s LGBT+ Side group, a community group for queer residents, who explained the powerful sense of community the island has.

How much is the BnB-side bitesize Winter Creative Retreat?
£495 per person includes accommodation, all meals and activities.
