These LGBTQIA+ films and TV shows are a great way to start the year

Attention screenbuffs! A new year is around the corner, and we have good news: there are lots of LGBTQIA+ releases to get excited about. If these January releases are anything to go by, 2026 is going to be an excellent year for film and TV. Keep reading to see what you should add to your watch list.

A Friend Of Dorothy: 1 January

Yes, yes, yes! This is what I said when I discovered I could cure my inevitable New Queers Eve hangover with seeing the hilarious and wonderful Miriam Margolyes on my screen. This moving short film is sure to pull at your heartstrings, while providing plenty of laughs along the way.

Bridgerton: Season 4, Part 1: 29 January

This season will be told to audiences in two instalments. Part one will be coming out on 29 January with part two coming out on 26 February. The show has always boasted LGBTQIA+ talent like Jonathan Bailey and Golda Rosheuvel and it has gone on to receive praise for introducing more LGBTQIA+ storylines among its characters.

The Moment: 30 January

Fierce LGBTQIA+ advocate and icon, Charli xcx is here to see in Brat Winter with this mockumentary. It also signals the start to a strong year for queer A24 releases. The star-studded cast includes: Charli xcx, Rosanna Arquette, Kate Berlant, Jamie Demetriou, Kylie Jenner, Hailey Benton Gates, Isaac Powell, Rachel Sennott and Alexander Skarsgård. We will all be seated in the theatres.

Other January releases

The Traitors UK and The Traitors US: 1 and 8 January, respectively. We can’t wait to be reunited with hosts Claudia Winkleman and Alan Cumming.

A Thousand Blows: Season 2: 9 January. Adolescence’s Erin Doherty stuns in this one.

People We Meet On Vacation: 9 January. We’re keen to see queer star Jameela Jamil in this book-to-screen adaptation.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy: January 15. This franchise has always found its way into the hearts of LGBTQIA+ audiences.
