This week (13-19 Nov) is Trans Awareness Week. It’s a time to come together as a community to support trans+ people, to learn and educate each other and to celebrate the incredible work of trans+ people.

What is Trans Awareness Week?

Trans Awareness Week is an annual celebration of the trans+ community, committed to supporting and amplifying the voices of the trans+ community. It offers a chance for the trans+ community and allies to raise awareness about the major issues facing the trans+ community through education and advocacy.

Each year, Trans Awareness Week leads up to Trans Day Of Remembrance (20 November) which commemorates the victims of transphobic violence.

How did Trans Awareness Week start?

Trans Day Of Remembrance started in 1999 when advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith held a vigil to commemorate Rita Hester who was killed in 1998. Now, we have Trans Awareness Week to lead up to this pivotal awareness day, helping to amplify the voices of trans people with the hopes of ending transphobia.

Why is this year’s Trans Awareness Week so important?

In 2025, the trans+ community has faced discrimination and attacks around the world. In the UK, the Supreme Court ruling in April led to a rise in transphobia, particularly in gendered spaces like bathrooms. Trump’s administration in the US has continually attacked the rights of trans+ people. Around the world, trans+ people are facing heightened levels of transphobia. It’s precisely these reasons that we must amplify the voices of trans+ people and for allies to vocally show their support and solidarity.

How can you celebrate Trans Awareness Week?

This Trans+ Awareness Week, it is vital for allies to be loud and proud with their support. Attend local events that are celebrating the trans+ community, or create your own if there isn’t one available. Shop from trans+ owned businesses, listen to trans+ artists and educate yourself on trans+ history and advocacy.
