Can you do no contact after a breakup? If you can, then girli’s new song Better Undressed might not be for you. If, however, you’re the type of person who struggles to let go of love, this track needs to be on your playlist right now.

Alt-pop pioneer girli is returning with this new track that will redefine her artist persona. She’s moving away from the high-concept production that fans saw with tracks like Matriarchy and moving to raw, playful expression.

Speaking about this new song, girli said: “Better Undressed is a song for the people who can’t do no contact post breakup. The only thing weirder than getting undressed with someone is getting redressed after. Going from knowing someone intimately to having to pretend you never knew them like that and move on when you still yearn for that connection, is super hard.”

With visual references to the 2000s in the song’s music video, this song is both self-aware and satirical. With lyrics like “come on over, we could call it closure”, it’s a little too close to home for anyone who’s tried – and failed – to move on from an ex. Given that sapphics notoriously struggle to completely cut ties with exes, it’s clear that this track is queer as they come.

Following the success of her second album Matriarchy, girli has collected a queer cult following. She’s used her platform to advocate for social change, and has continually provided LGBTQIA+ representation. This new chapter builds on her past work, inspired by her call to action but approaching it from a more human lens.
