There’s truly a jungle of vibrators to choose from out there, and it can feel overwhelming and confusing to know what to go for as a beginner.

I’m Sofie Roos, a licensed sexologist and relationship therapist, as well as author for the Swedish relationship and sex positive magazine Passionerad. In this article, I’m here to guide all you fellow sapphics out there through the basics of vibrators so you can find the model that suits you the best!

10 different types of vibrators

Bullet vibrators (small, cheap and for the clit)

These vibrators are small and bullet-formed, perfect for stimulating the clit thanks to its sharp shape. You can also use them on the nipples!

Bullets are budget-friendly, small and easy to carry with you. They are mid-strong and work well for both masturbation and sex with others, especially during pegging in doggy style and the missionary, where you easily can reach the clit!

G-spot vibrators (for g-spot stimulation)

These baddies are shaped to vibrate at the g-spot, perfect for people who’d like to explore g-spot stimulation, and in the best of worlds, experience a g-spot orgasm!

Wands/massage vibrators (strong and with a long shaft)

Wands are the vibrators that look like a massage tool. They have a long shaft, and in the end, there’s a vibrating silicone piece that you lay towards the clit, on the ass, the breasts or at any other part of your body that you’d like to get stimulated.

The upsides of the wands are how strongly they vibrate and how easy it is to reach, thanks to the long shaft!

Rabbit dildos/rabbit vibrators (stimulate the clit and g-spot at the same time)

These vibrators are formed like a G-spot vibrator with a small vibrating arm for the clitoris, making it the perfect choice for sapphics who’d like to stimulate both the G-spot and the clit at the same time. And yes, if you’re lucky, it can give you double orgasms!

Air pulse vibrators (guarantee strong clitoral orgasms quickly)

These are the vibrators that, with air give a pulsing and sucking feeling at your clit, almost guaranteeing orgasms for all sapphics, and often within just a few minutes. These vibrators work best for masturbation since they require that you put them just right to feel great.

Anal vibrators (stimulate the anus and/or prepare for anal sex)

An anal vibrator is basically a vibrating butt plug which you insert in the ass. It can be used both to prepare for anal sex and to get pleasure from the vibrations, which often builds up a stronger and more dynamic feeling if combined with, for example, vaginal stimulation.

Finger vibrators (make your finger a vibrator)

These are like small bullet vibrators which you can put on your finger, giving a unique grip that fits people who’d like to minimise the distance between the hand and the vibrator and instead make the vibrator an extension of your finger.

Couple vibrators (use during pegging, oral or finger sex)

A couple vibrator is a sex toy made to be used with your partner. The slimmed design lets you perform oral sex, finger or peg at the same time as the vibrator is inserted. They are often controlled remotely, which makes you able to use them in public places, and many models do stimulate both the clit and the G-spot, leading to a truly tingling stimulation!

Oral sex vibrators (stimulate the feeling of getting licked)

These vibrators often have some sort of rolling tongue or dot that feels like a person licking you, which is great, especially for singles who miss the feeling of having someone’s face between their legs!

Panties vibrators (can be used in public)

A panties vibrator is put in your panties and is often used when being in public with a partner controlling the stimulation, such as when having dinner, being at a bar or a club, when attending a concert or going for a walk.

Other things to think about

  • Will you be using the vibrator in the shower or when taking a bath, or are you a squirter? Then go for a waterproof model!
  • In-built or external batteries? In-built is better long-term, but a bit more expensive.
  • Do you want to be able to control it from a distance or via your phone? Then go for a remote option!
  • What material do you want? Silicone is the softest option, while hard plastic is cheaper and gives a rougher feeling.
  • Are you picky with how you like your stimulation? Then go for an option with many vibration settings!

Cheap vs. expensive vibrator, what’s the difference?

All vibrators comes in a wide variety of sizes and price classes – and generally, as with anything else, you get what you pay for – so a more expensive option will in the majority of cases vibrate stronger, reach the g-spot or clit better as well as be built with a better material, a longer battery life and more vibration options to choose from.
