We may be in September, but Pride season is far from over. Margate Black Pride will be taking place on 13 September between 2 pm and 10 pm at Margate Beach Club.
The event celebrates and supports LGBTQIA+ people of African, Asian, Caribbean, Latin American, Pacific Islander and Middle Eastern descent. Founded in 2022 by Gaëtan Gauthier, this self-funded grassroots Pride event will create a space for visibility, celebration and solidarity.
Gaëtan, founder of Margate Black Pride, said: “We are here to celebrate LGBTQIA+ people of the diaspora in all our richness. From African, Asian, Caribbean, Pacific Islanders, Latin American and Middle-Eastern communities and beyond, our Pride is a gathering of voices too often erased. Being grassroots and self-funded means we can remain accountable to those communities first and foremost.”
According to the 2021 census, Cliftonville West in Margate has one of the highest LGBTQIA+ populations in the country. Events like Margate Black Pride are crucial for building community and raising awareness about the issues that African, Asian and Caribbean, Pacific Islanders, Latin American and Middle-Eastern LGBTQIA+ people face.
This year, the event’s community partners include Pride in Education, Schools OUT and SWANA Queers. Attendees will be able to access free community stalls, live performances from acts like Huseyin Uzkar, belly dance and playwright Rahim El Habachi and dancer Vipul Bhatti.
