Here’s a beginner’s guide from a licensed sexologist

Are you new to the wonderful world of sapphic sex? Do you feel like you have no idea what positions would work? Well, I have got you covered.
My name is Sofie Roos, and I’m a licensed sexologist, relationship therapist and author at the Swedish relationship and sex positive magazine Passionera. I’m here to guide you through the basics – so here is all you need to know about sapphic sex positions as a beginner.
Missionary
This is considered by some to be the classiest of the classic sex positions. One of you simply gets on your back and spreads your legs, and the other one gets on top and takes support with the arms so you lie face to face.
You can have strap or peg in the missionary, but you can also finger each other, stimulate the clitoris, and touch other erogenous zones, or simply make out.
Missionary is very intimate, easy to have, you can vary it in tons of ways by positioning the legs in new ways or by putting a pillow under the lumbar spine, which enables new angles. And you can have it in so many places – so there are many reasons this is one of the world’s most popular sex positions!
Pro tip: By pressing on the stomach around 8-10 centimetres under the belly button during penetration in missionary, you can make the dildo penetrate the G-spot, which feels beyond this world amazing!
Doggy style
Many sapphics regard doggy style as being a sex position for heterosexuals and gay men, but that’s missing out on an amazing way of getting intimate.
To position yourself in doggy, you simply kneel and put your hands down for support so your ass is facing upwards to the giver. They can either then perform oral sex, use a strap, or use a dildo by hand, play with a vibrator or want, or simply finger you.
Doggy style is quite intense during penetration of any sort since it offers deep stimulation and intense sensations on the G-spot. Therefore, for a newbie, I recommend starting out by not arching your back so much – that makes it milder!
If you want to switch things up, then play around with how wide you place your legs, how you have your head, how deep you make the angle (choose that by lowering or raising your butt) and by stimulating your clitoris when standing in doggy style, preferably with a vibrator.
The 69
Well, do I have to say more…?
This is many sapphics’ favourite sex position thanks to it being so intimate and intense.
One of you lies down on your back, and the other partner gets over with their ass over the face of the one being under. You can then finger or eat each other out at the same time.
I recommend switching who’s on top and who’s lying under. And don’t forget that you can shut off the lights if that makes you more comfortable.
Pro tip: Many sapphics find this position easier if lying on their sides since this enables you to reach more areas with ease.
Spooning
This position is very relaxed, intimate and pleasurable. Especially during using a dildo on your partner.
Both of you lie on your side, and the one giving pleasure is behind the other one, making them the “big spoon”, while the other one lies close.
Pro tip: The big spoon can easily reach the small spoon’s ear and whisper dirty things, or kiss their neck. They can also reach their nipples, clit or simply hug them.
Cowgirl
For this position, one of you lies on the back or sits against the headboard of the bed, and the other one gets on top for a ride.
You can use a strap-on, you can finger each other, or the one riding can dry hump, meaning that they rub against their partner in whatever way feels great for them.
You can ride your partner facing them, or by turning around.
This is also an awesome position for simulating each other’s breasts, or for the one lying down to give the rider’s ass some love by using the hands.
Pro tip: If the one riding gets on their feet instead of standing on their knees, it’s easier to ride back and forth instead of up and down, something that lets you rub your clitoris against your partner. This many times leads to a clitoral orgasm, especially if using a strap-on!
Scissoring
Last but not least, we have the old-time sapphic classic scissoring, which is a position where you rub your vaginas, and often your clits, against each other in a way that feels pleasurable.
To do this, it’s all about spreading your legs and “dock” to each other. Picture a pair of open scissors that are put together (hence this sex position’s name)!
This can be done in a variety of ways, and some pleasurable suggestions of mine are:
- The two of you sitting on your bums
- Both of you are lying on the side
- One is on the side and one is lying on the back
- One lying on the back and the other one being the “big spoon” behind them
- One being on their back with a leg up, and the other one “riding” the clit by taking support from the partners leg
It’s all about getting creative and trying out different ways until you find something you like, and I’m sure you can find even more ways than the ones I just mentioned.
