Remi Wolf has taken to the grid to share a snippet of a vulnerable new track with her fans. The California singer and producer made waves last year with her electric sophomore album Big Ideas.
The genre fusing epic stretched from disco funk all the way to meditative acoustic. The unnamed track maintains a folky guitar, elevating the stripped-back vulnerability of her vocals.
The onomatopoeic refrain āring ting tingā is both cutting and delicate, embodying the laid-back, dissociative lull of the song.
Wolf wrestles with themes of nihilism and growing pain, opening with the lyrics, āEverybodyās stupid and now everything is pointless/ And Iām realising heavily that nothing really matters/ Like a ring ting ting from the tip of your nut/ A ring ting ting at the bottom of the sea.ā
She oscillates from her perceptions of others to othersā perceptions of hers, expressing feeling humiliated and watched, āEveryone is watching me and everyone is laughingā¦:
Before moving outwards again to address an outside party, perhaps an ex-lover, singing, āSo I know youāre five foot three but youāre eight feet tall in my eyes/ I was one foot in and one foot out all the time.ā
Wolf encapsulates the paralysis encountered in balancing your perception of others with your perception of self. Though in reality, her addressee is not physically imposing, in her eyes, they loom over her, suggesting they are out of her reach.
The artist continues the vulnerable track exploring how other friends in her life are progressing in their relationships, and getting engaged, whilst she is āold and fat and in the momentā.
Much like her last album, Wolf suggests an evolution without feeling a need to hint at an ulterior optimism. The singer allows change to be a grey state of being and demonstrates a humbling amount of self-awareness.
