Are you ready for a queer TV marathon?

Pride month might be over, but queer cinema should be enjoyed all year round. Here are five new releases to watch this July if you’re already missing LGBTQIA+ stories. 

Such Brave Girls

2 July 

The second series of this irreverent comedy centres around two girls and their mother as they confront every blunder and miscalculation with humour. It’s available to watch now on BBC iPlayer. 

The Old Guard 2

2 July 

Charlize Theron returns as Andy, who grapples with her newfound immortality as she and her team must confront an immortal who has escaped and is looking for revenge. Joe and Nicky, two of the immortal warriors, are a gay couple who have fought alongside each other for centuries. This fantastical film is available on Netflix. 

Dear Ms.: A Revolution In Print

2 July 

This documentary looks back at 70s magazine Ms, which was initially led by feminist journalist Gloria Steinem. It was the first magazine in the US to be women-run and founded, and explored topics like lesbianism, the representation of Black women and abortion rights. Premiering on HBO Max, the film uses archival footage and interviews with the women involved to explore the magazine’s impact. 

Hot Milk 

4 July 

Based on Deborah Levy’s 2016 novel, Hot Milk follows the story of Sofia (Emma Mackey) and her mother Rose (Fiona Shaw), who travel to Spain in an attempt to cure the latter’s illness. Sophie meets a girl there Starring Emma Mackey of Sex Education fame and Fiona Shaw (Fleabag, Killing Eve, Harry Potter), the casting directors obviously knew how to draw in the queer girlies. 

Too Much

10 July 

Lena Dunham’s new TV show is inspired by her own life. Openly bisexual actor Megan Stalter (Hacks) plays a mid-30s workaholic from New York, who impulsively moves to London after a breakup. She said she could “totally see” the character being bisexual too. 

Acapulco season four

23 July 

The latest instalment of Apple TV’s comedy series will grace your screens at the end of July. The show sees successful businessman Máximo Gallardo tell his nephew stories from his youth in the 1980s, flashing back and forth between the past and present. Maximo’s sister, Sara, is a lesbian. She has a storyline dedicated to her romantic relationship with her best friend and how they navigate dealing with their homophobic families.
