“I’m definitely queer,” the singer and DJ confirmed in a TikTok last weekend, which she captioned “I do it for the girls and gays but also hey girls”.
Although she doesn’t remember publicly talking about her identity or coming out to her fans, the singer has been tagged in “queer artists to know” videos.
“How do people know?” she asked. “How do they just clock you like that?”
In response, commenters were quick to point to the lyrics to her 2020 song Slime, which hint at having sex with women. Her 2022 track Coochie (A Bedtime Story) relays a similar message which resonated with queer fans. Others said her alternative look and the specific sound of her music led them to guess at her sexuality.
The London-based genre-blending artist admitted: “I sometimes forget what I said in interviews.”
Her video was met with a positive response, with many commenters saying that they were unsurprised. One said: “You make good music so you gotta be something.”
Shygirl is a 32-year-old London-based DJ, singer and rapper, known for combining grime, hip-hop, dance music and pop into her three EPS and 2022 album which was released to wide critical acclaim. She is also the co-head and co-founder of the music collective and record label Nuxxe, which gained traction when Fenty Beauty used its songs in their adverts.
She grew up in Southeast London and studied photography and tried modelling before releasing her debut EP in 2018. Since, she has collaborated with artists like Arca and in 2024 opened for Charli XCX and Troye Sivan on the North America leg of the Sweat Tour.
She ended the TikTok video by saying: “Thank you for remembering to put me in the chat.”
