If you’ve ever experienced a sapphic relationship or gone through a sapphic breakup, it’s highly likely you may have listened to FLETCHER’s songs to feel your feels. FLETCHER aka Cari Fletcher is not just the singer-songwriter between some of the horniest sapphic songs of all-time, her hit track Becky’s So Hot went viral and the “lesbian breakup curse” was born on TikTok.
While Fletcher has publicly been known to date women and has largely written about her relationships with women, she has consistently labelled herself as queer or fluid. Back in 2021, when asked by fans if she is a lesbian or bi, she told them: “I just exist. If someone needed to put me in some sort of category for themselves to better understand, I would say I identify as queer.”
Fast forward four years, and Fletcher has opened up about her experience with falling in love with a man. Her forthcoming studio album is titled Would You Still Love Me If You Really Knew Me? and features a track called Boy on it. Speaking to Rolling Stone, she said: “I had met a boy and started feeling romantic and emotional feelings and we kissed. I was like, ‘What the f— is going on?’ My whole world felt flipped upside down.”
“I’ve always written about my love stories and my heart and very candidly written about what I’ve been experiencing. ‘Boy’ is just another love story. ‘Boy’ is just one revelation of many. It’s not an album about a guy,” she continued.
The singer-songwriter explained that there will be people who will “feel disappointed and feel confused and have questions”. “Girl, I had questions and I was confused too. It shocked me just as much as anybody else,” she said.
Within the interview she reaffirmed that she’s “so proud to be queer” and “that is not something that has ever wavered or changed”. “Being queer for me is this lens that I get to view life through,” she stated.
In conversation with Them, Fletcher confessed that she kissed a boy, fell in love and is also currently dating him. “I’m cycling through some of the same feelings I felt when I came out 10 years ago of shame and guilt and fear and anxiety, and wondering how people are going to react and going to receive me,” she reflected. “I feel nervous, but I also know that my only obligation in this lifetime is to wholeheartedly show up for myself and create a safe space for myself and as a ripple effect, hope that that creates space for other people to be themselves and to step into that.”
Fellow queer popstar JoJo Siwa recently made headlines for starting a relationship with Chris Hughes. She had previously identified as a lesbian and used words such as gay to describe herself. But during her time on Big Brother she opened up about realising that she is not a lesbian and is queer and is also exploring her gender identity.
While many have celebrated JoJo embracing an evolving identity, you don’t have to look very far to see an overwhelming amount of bi and queerphobic commentary.
It’s 2025. We need to stop erasing queer women who date men. We have a long way to go when it comes to busting myths and shedding stigma on the topic. Our community is wonderfully diverse, and all sexualities within it are equally worth celebrating.
Would You Still Love Me If You Really Knew Me? will be released on 18 July.
