And Just Like That… is returning to our screens again, and to say we’re excited is perhaps an understatement. The sequel to the cult classic show Sex And The City captured LGBTQIA+ viewers’ hearts and attention when Cynthia Nixon’s character, Miranda Hobbes, had her queer awakening with Che Diaz.

You may know all about Miranda, but how much do you know about the actor behind this iconic role? Here are some facts you might not know about Cynthia Nixon.

She is a breast cancer survivor

In 2006, Cynthia was diagnosed with breast cancer after a routine mammogram. After undergoing treatment, she opened up about her battle with breast cancer two years later. She stated that she hadn’t wanted to make it public when she was going through treatment and recovery for fear of paparazzi. She is now a staunch advocate for breast cancer awareness.

She was nearly cast as Dana Scully in The X Files

It’s hard to imagine anyone else but Gillian Anderson in the role of Dana Scully – aka everyone’s lesbian awakening – in The X Files. In an NPR podcast episode, Gillian spoke about her experience auditioning for the role when executives on the project didn’t think she was “good enough” for the show. “So I was auditioning suddenly with Jill Hennessy and Cynthia Nixon,” Gillian revealed.

She ran for Governor of New York

In 2018, Cynthia ran for Governor of New York as part of the Working Families Party, challenging Democratic incumbent Andrew Cuomo. She focused her campaign on issues like income inequality, universal healthcare and renewable energy. On her campaign website, she spoke about why she was running. “We need a New York that works for all of us – a New York for the many, not just the few.”

Cynthia lost out to Cuomo in the election, gaining 35% of the vote.

The subway is her favourite place in the world

In an interview with Oprah Daily, Cynthia spoke about her rather unusual love for the New York subway. Describing it as her “favourite place in the world”, Cynthia’s love of the subway knows no bounds. When running for Governor in 2018, fixing the subway actually became one of the focal points of her campaign.

She bagged her first on-screen role when she was just eight years old

While we may know Cynthia Nixon as the iconic Miranda Hobbes, she got her first on-screen role when she was just eight years old. Starring on the game show To Tell The Truth, Cynthia played one of the “imposters” on the show. Her mother worked on the show which may explain how she got the coveted gig, but it’s adorable all the same.

She has shown up time and time again for the trans community

Earlier this year, Cynthia gave an impassioned speech at a rally in New York about the importance of trans rights and access to gender-affirming healthcare. As the proud mother of a trans son, she has repeatedly shown up for the trans community when they need allyship most.
