Read on for awesome queer animation

Netflix’s animated show, Big Mouth, came out in 2017 and instantly became a firm favourite on the streaming platform. While wildly unhinged, it has relatable moments for anyone who has ever gone through the horrors of puberty. It has also portrayed a range of LGBTQIA+ characters in its time on air. And today (23 May), the streaming giant will be releasing the show’s eighth and final season.

It’s time to say goodbye to the characters and monsters we’ve all come to know and love. But if you’re looking for more animated goodness to scratch a similar itch, then you’re in luck. Here are five recommendations to add to your watch-list.

The Second Best Hospital In The Galaxy

This Prime Video series has a star-studded queer cast from Keke Palmer, Abbi, Jacobson, Kemah Bob and Sam Smith; who voice characters alongside icons such as Stephanie Hsu, Natasha Lyonne and Maya Rudolph. It’s often pitched as being like “Grey’s Anatomy” in space, but it’s gayer!

Harley Quinn

Live-action films all too often ignore this iconic supervillain’s bisexuality. Well, not this time! This adult series follows Harley’s adventures after she breaks up with the Joker and begins to forge a life for herself. It’s received lots of praise from #HarlIvy fans for a reason.

Disenchantment

A League Of Their Own and Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson is the lead of this Netflix show, where she plays Princess Tiabeanie aka Bean. This adult fantasy series follows the shenanigans of Bean as she meets Luci, a demon, and Elfo, an elf. Without giving too much away, there certainly is a gay happily ever after.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off

When the comic-to-screen 2010 adaptation of the Scott Pilgrim comics, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, came out, Ramona Flowers’ bisexuality was nodded to, but wasn’t given much time. But in this animated series, it’s much more overt and we get to see the original cast – including bisexual star Aubrey Plaza – reprise their roles but as voice actors this time around.

BoJack Horseman

Like Big Mouth, this Netflix show has a large cast of characters, many of whom are often wildly inappropriate. While queerness isn’t a huge part of this show, there is some much-praised asexual representation later in the series, which has been considered ahead of its time.
