Showtime has officially renewed Yellowjackets for a fourth season, a decision that comes as no surprise given the overwhelming success of its third instalment. The announcement comes roughly one month after the season three finale, which exceeded fans’ expectations, surpassed viewership records, and became the most streamed episode in the series’ history, drawing three million global viewers within its first seven days across linear platforms and Paramount+.

Building on this momentum, season three became the most watched and most socially engaged season to date. Its success has been recognised, with 10 Emmy nominations, including nods for Outstanding Drama Series, acting, and directing.

ā€œYellowjacket has become a cultural juggernaut, with season three shattering all previous records — we are thrilled to announce its renewal for a season four on Paramount+,ā€ expressed Chris McCarthy, Co-CEO of Paramount Global and President of Showtime/ MTV Entertainment Studios.

Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, Yellowjackets follows a high school girls’ soccer team whose lives are upended after surviving a traumatic plane crash in the remote wilderness. The show weaves together dual timelines: the girls’ brutal fight for survival as teens, and 25 years later, their struggle to confront the aftermath and rebuild their lives back home. Yellowjackets blends elements of survival drama, psychological horror, and coming-of-age storytelling.

Season three finally confirmed a sapphic fan theory: Shauna is bisexual. Melanie Lynksey, who portrays adult Shauna, is a vocal LGBTQIA advocate, proudly calling herself a pusher of the ā€œhomosexual agendaā€, and has starred in impactful queer roles including in Heavenly Creatures and But I’m A Cheerleader.

The younger version of Shauna, played by Sophie NĆ©lisse, began the show with an emotionally charged fixation on her best friend Jackie (Ella Purnell), hinting at feelings that go beyond friendship. In a memorable moment in season three, episode two, Shauna kisses Melissa (Jenna Burgess), who was previously a background actor. This is not Yellowjackets’ first queer narrative, with Taissa (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and Van’s (Liv Hewson) beautiful romance unfolding in both timelines.
