19 May marks Agender Pride Day, a joyous celebration of people who may not connect with a gender identity label.
What does Agender mean?
Agender is a term which falls under trans and non-binary umbrellas, usually referring to people who feel like they experience no gender identity. While some people use the label to reject any form of gender identity, others feel as though the term “agender” is a gender identity in itself.
How did Agender Pride Day start?
While the direct roots of Agender Pride Day aren’t widely reported on, the first Agender Pride Day took place in 2017 on 19 May. The day aims to celebrate people who do not identify with a specific gender or gender identity around the world, recognising their struggles and obstacles living in an often binary world.
The first Agender Pride Day took place just months after a US resident legally identified as agender in 2017.
What does the flag mean?
Created by a user called Salem X on Tumblr in 2014, the same year agender was made available as a gender option on Facebook, the flag is made up of seven stripes. The black and white represent the absence of gender, while the green represents non-binary genders. The grey represents those who are semi-genderless.
How to celebrate Agender Pride Day?
Like any awareness day, how you choose to celebrate Agender Pride Day is up to you. If you identify as agender, you could fill the day with activities that affirm your identity. That may be wearing a specific outfit, doing a hobby you enjoy or speaking to friends who have been allies in your journey.
If you aren’t agender, the fun doesn’t have to stop for you. Use the day to learn more about agender identities, clueing up on new terminology and phrases. You could discover new agender artists like rapper Angel Haze. Follow agender activists and learn how you can best show up as an ally.
