The National Theatre has announced that Pride, the 2014 film based on the incredible true events of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, will be getting a stage adaptation.

With performances in both London and Cardiff, this new musical will reunite the original director of the film Matthew Warchus with its writer Stephen Beresford. This musical version will feature music from Christopher Nightingale, Josh Cohen and DJ Walde.

Pride follows the real-life story of LGBTQIA activists supporting striking miners in 1984 Wales. Starring Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton and Andrew Scott, the film quickly became a hit with sapphics for its heartwarming narrative and lesbian representation in Faye Marsay’s character Steph. The film, which was nominated for a Golden Globe and BATFA, also starred Baby Reindeer’s Jessica Gunning.

Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) was a bold, defiant alliance formed during the 1984-85 UK miners’ strike. Queer activists raised funds and solidarity for striking Welsh miners, forging an unlikely but powerful bond that challenged prejudice on both sides — and helped reshape the landscape of British social justice politics.

Last year, Jessica Gunning spoke about the experience of rewatching the film after coming out. As reported by The Standard, she participated in a Q&A for the film’s 10th anniversary last year. On stage, she said: “I realised I hadn’t watched the film since coming out, so I thought it would be great to attend and see it again. It was really emosh actually. I have always obviously been a big, old gay but it took me 36 years to realise it.”
