Up-and-coming lesbian photographer Georgia Edmunds is the creative behind Planet Lesbian. This photography-led creative brand is right at the start of what promises to be a significant journey. The project is driven by Georgia’s passion to artistically visualise different aspects of the queer and lesbian experience. I had the pleasure of delving into its promising beginnings.
I had a chat with Georgia to talk about the exciting potential of Planet Lesbian. From creating a book to having queer creative events, and the profound inspiration she draws from the queer community, it’s clear we should all be booking a one-way ticket to Planet Lesbian.
When did you get into queer photography?
It has always been embedded into me, but it officially came out when I did my zine which was the birth of Planet Lesbian. I got into queer photography through being in a queer friendship group. When we’re getting ready, we take photos of each other, and we all dress up so that also influences my work as well as other factors. So that’s when it started, and it’s not stopped!

Who are your inspirations?
I’m obsessed with The L Word. I have it all on box set. It really inspires me as well as fashion. I’m always inspired by my friends. Recently I’ve been inspired by Joan E Biren. I love her book. It is like my bible. I love Tee Corinne and I love Nan Goldin. I’m also influenced by today’s queer culture, even shows like I Kissed A Girl. It’s so big right now and it’s so easy to be inspired. I am also just inspired by our community in general – it’s the authenticity that is at the centre of it.
I saw that you were shooting with Fiorenza from I Kissed A Girl, what was that like?
It was amazing. She’s so lovely and so sweet. She drove three and a half hours from Glasgow to Manchester and we hung out for a bit afterwards.

How does Planet Lesbian keep developing?
I am still developing Planet Lesbian as my core concept which I’ve broken into eight different shoots to go inside a book. I’m hoping to create a photo book just called Planet Lesbian. I’m hoping to create Planet Lesbian as a brand and have events and create t-shirts!
What would the eight different sections of the book be?
One section is called Tough Cookie and it’s a love letter to masculine and butch people. I’ve shot six different masculine presenting butch individuals [which includes Fiorenza].

I did an L Word shoot, styling and casting people that looked like the characters. I had Shane, Dana, Jenny, and Bette. I did a big shoot called Queer Play. Me and my friends love to go to queer raves and dress up, so it was a shoot inspired by that. It was like a full production and I’m really proud of that one. Another is Lestopia which is a dreamt-up utopia which I shot in Hebden Bridge.
I have a really exciting one called Ross and Helen. I’ve been following this lesbian couple who are in their sixties who have been together since ‘83 and I’ve been meeting up with them. It’s been beautiful – their love story is insane.
