If you binge-watched Netflix hit show Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE last year, this news is for you. KATSEYE member Lara has just come out as “half a fruitcake”.
Speaking on the South Korean musical artist platform Weverse, Lara revealed that she has identified as LGBTQIA since a young age.
She said: “I knew I was half a fruitcake when I was like eight so I really was wanting everybody. Honestly probably before eight. Isn’t half a fruitcake such a good way to explain it without saying it.”
Lara was one of the contestants on the talent competition reality show Dream Academy. The goal: to create an international girl group. Using K-pop’s rigorous training methods, 20 candidates were whittled down to just six, eventually forming the girl group KATSEYE. Lara quickly became a fan favourite for her vocal talent and effortlessly cool aura.
Speaking on Weverse, Lara revealed that she had been worried about coming out on the show. “You know in Dream Academy when it came out I was really really scared tbh. I didn’t know if people would accept me and I really thought it would ruin my chances of getting in [the group].”
She revealed that it had been fans’ support which had eventually given her the confidence to live authentically. “And then you all were so so nice about it and gave me so much love and support and it made me feel so confident in who I am so I love you for that.”
KATSEYE is made up of six members, including Daniela Avanzini, Manon Bannerman, Megan Skiendiel, Sophia Laforteza, and Yoonchae Jeong.
K-pop fans everywhere were thrilled by the news and were quick to congratulate her. By coming out, Lara has become one of the only K-pop idols to come out under a major record label. KATSEYE is under the same management as K-pop powerhouse BTS.
