Jodie Foster,  with two Oscars, three BAFTAs, an Emmy and five Golden Globes, has got to be one of the most decorated actors out there. Since she burst onto the film scene in the 1970s, she has been a force to be reckoned with.

Here are four of our favourite roles.

Bonnie Stoll in Nyad

2023’s biopic about swimmer Diana Nyad was incredible and unsurprisingly garnered several award nominations for the two leads, Annette Bening and Jodie Foster. While Annette played the titular 60-year-old swimmer, Jodie played Bonnie Stoll, Diana’s best friend, hired to train her to swim from Florida to Cuba.

This incredible LGBTQIA film has got to be one of our favourites of all the films Jodie has done.

Clarice Starling in The Silence Of The Lambs

This has got to be one of Jodie’s best roles. Clarice, an FBI agent who interviews a cannibal in the hopes of catching another killer, has been ranked as one of the best film heroes of all time by the American Film Institute

This role won Jodie an Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe. But, this could easily have not been the case as director Jonathan Demme initially didn’t think Jodie was right for the role. His pick was Michelle Pfeiffer, who turned down the role due to its subject matter. His next choice was Mega Ryan, who also turned it down. Eventually, they settled on Jodie, and it’s safe to say, she smashed it.

Liz Danvers in True Detective: Night Country

The fourth season of this anthology series won Jodie her Emmy. She played Liz, a chief in the Alaska State Troopers, who is trying to find out what happened to eight men who vanished whilst operating the Tsala Arctic Research Station.

The frosty work relationship between Liz and Kali Reis’ Trooper Evangeline Navarro made for an incredible watch. Their partnership was so tense, it had many fans wondering if there were sapphic undertones in the script.

Alexandra Rover in Nim’s Island

Who else remembers and loves this 2008 gem? In this children’s adventure film, Jodie plays an agoraphobic author who emails a marine biologist for information that she’ll use in her new book. The biologist lives on an island with his daughter, Nim (Abigail Breslin), who answers the email and starts up a conversation with Alex.

When Nim’s father gets lost at sea, Alex has to get past her fears to help her pen-pal. Jodie often plays heavy roles, like Clarice and Liz, so to see her in a children’s adventure was beautiful.
