We can’t get enough of the rising star who is pushing boundaries everywhere

Doechii has secured her place as a prominent rapper and performer, winning a Grammy, and having over a billion streams. But her influence extends far beyond the studio. Now, she’s rapidly becoming a style icon in her own right too, dominating the latest runways and becoming a muse for top designers. With a bold new chapter comes a bold new style. A new alter ego. This is your ultimate style guide to the Doechii aesthetic.
Academic aesthetic
This new era of Doechii reveals a distinct preppy, tailored aesthetic. This reflects her personal growth over the past year. This evolution manifests in her embrace of an academic style. As she said in a Vogue interview: “I did a lot of studying; studying myself and a student of hip-hop, which you can see reflected in some of the academia looks.” The pinstripe suits paired with fitted shirts and ties create an office-chic vibe that we adore, showing a sophisticated and powerful side of Doechii.
This aesthetic with its sharp lines and sophisticated vibe, shares a resemblance with style elements historically celebrated within lesbian fashion. The tailored suit, a garment often associated with empowerment and breaking traditional gender norms, has long held significance within sapphic culture. Doechii’s contemporary take on this classic style, with its androgynous and powerful energy, taps into that same spirit of confidence and individuality, while also reflecting her own fluid expression of bisexuality. This approach to tailoring is seen in her looks, such as her NPR Tiny Desk performance and her multiple Thom Browne ensembles at the Grammys, solidifying her status as one of Thom Browne’s newest muses.
“Trashy Core”
While Doechii’s current preppy chic marks a distinct stylistic shift, her signature blend of designer labels with streetwear and vintage finds remains consistent. This blend aligns more closely with her previous self-titled “trashy core” aesthetic, yet we can still see glimpses of this now. Notably, her runway appearance for Dsquared2 directly reflected her wearing a Dsquared2 gown at the 2023 VMAs. A perfect example of this mix is when she paired a designer fur coat with a nostalgic distressed graphic tee. She effortlessly blends high and low to create her uniquely recognisable aesthetic. While this “trashy core” aesthetic was less polished than her current style, the experimental and unconventional approach is what we have come to love from her fashion.
Hair and Makeup
Doechii’s iconic style broadens out into her hair and makeup. A recent point of discussion surrounding her beauty choices has been her use of face tape. Doechii uses face tape to define her features, openly displaying a technique that is often concealed. Sam Woolf, Doechii’s stylist, said in an interview for The New York Times that “she likes exposing something that’s meant to be hidden. She just thinks outside the box, and she likes being vulnerable, and she likes showing things that you’re not meant to show.” This transformative approach to beauty is now on full display, proving that she embraces vulnerability and encourages us to be open and expressive in our own beauty.
Beyond her use of face tape, Doechii also uses hair as a powerful tool to express her unique style. At the Grammys, she intricately created a crown from her braids, a look that was both experimental and a vibrant celebration of Black beauty. Malcolm Marquez, Doechii’s hair stylist, said in an interview for Elle: “Doechii and I both understand the power and cultural impact a hairstyle can have. Every look we create together has Black history and futures in mind.” Not only proving that she can look amazing but also sending a message that challenges conventional beauty standards.
Evolution
Although we love the preppy tailored chic, we can be certain that Doechii’s style evolution will continue. As she said in her Dazed interview: “It just depends on where I am in my life. I’ll never pinpoint myself. I’ll never lock myself down to one particular style. It’s not me. It never will be me.” This promise of constant change is what makes her a true style icon.
