Get ready to hear from some of the most exciting voices in LGBTQIA filmmaking at this year’s BFI Flare with the return of their popular interview series The Makers. With guests like The Wedding Banquet’s Andrew Ahn and James Schamus and renowned screenwriter Rebecca Lenkiewicz, The Makers series will take place in the iconic BFI Southbank during the festival (19-30 March). 

The BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival is one of the world’s largest LGBTQIA film festivals, celebrating the power and diversity of queer filmmaking worldwide. This year’s festival will be opened by Andrew Ahn’s highly anticipated film The Wedding Banquet. The Makers series is just one of several events which allow audiences to learn more about what happens behind the big screen. 

Open to industry delegates and the public, these interviews will shed light on a number of important themes within LGBTQIA filmmaking today. You can learn more about this year’s BFI Flare here: bfi.org.uk/flare 

Here are the confirmed interviews that will make up The Makers series this year. 

ANDREW AHN AND JAMES SCHAMUS 

Wednesday 19 March, 15.00 – 16.00 – BFI Southbank, NFT 3 

Listen to Andrew Ahn, the visionary behind Fire Island and Spa Night, and James Schamus, the genius behind Brokeback Mountain and Eternal Sunshine, discuss all things filmmaking in this must-watch conversation. 

ONIR 

Friday 21 March, 15.00 – 16.00 – BFI Southbank, NFT 4 

Onir, one of India’s boldest LGBTQIA filmmakers, broke barriers with My Brother…Nikhil and continues to tell powerful queer stories. Fresh from BFI Flare 2024, he’s here to discuss his trailblazing career and his latest film We Are Faheem & Karun. 

REBECCA LENKIEWICZ 

Tuesday 25 March, 16.00 – 17.00 – BFI Southbank, NFT 4 

Don’t miss this conversation with Rebecca Lenkiewicz, the trailblazing playwright and Oscar-winning screenwriter behind Ida, Colette, and She Said. From breaking barriers at the National Theatre to her powerful screenplays, she now steps into directing with Hot Milk. 

MARCO BERGER 

Thursday 27 March, 16.00 – 17.00 – BFI Southbank, NFT 4 

Marco Berger, master of tension and male desire, has captivated audiences with Plan B, Absent, Hawaii, and more. Returning to BFI Flare, the award-winning filmmaker discusses his bold, intimate storytelling and his latest film The Astronaut Lovers.
