Horror fans everywhere are gearing up for Steven Soderbergh’s new film Presence, scheduled for release on 24 January. Starring Lucy Liu, Julia Fox, and Chris Sullivan, very little has been revealed about the premise of this new project.

As everyone knows, sapphics and horror films often go hand in hand. So it’s no surprise that the LGBTQIA community is excited to see queer icon Julia Fox on screen. The Uncut Gems star has quickly become a beloved icon in the community, but how much do you know about her? Here are a few things to note down before you head to the cinema…

She used to be a fashion designer

Before she was on screen, Julia worked as a fashion designer. She even launched a successful women’s line called Franziska Fox in 2014. She told Elle: “I really wished to propose a novel concept for knitwear, a form of dressing that I am most passionate about, and also to have a collection that is unafraid within today’s fashion landscape, in regards to the female form and intellect. I think those are the two focal points for the label.”

At just 23, her label had taken new heights with stars like Iggy Azalea and Lindsey Lohan wearing her signature body-con dresses. It’s no wonder that Julia is still such a fashion icon today.

She has published two books on photography

Following her fashion ventures, Julia actually became an author when she self-published her first photography book Symptomatic Of A Relationship Gone Sour: Heartburn/Nausea. The book followed the intricate balance between the highest of “highs” and the lowest of “lows”. It chronicled three relationships which had impacted her in some way, and her own response to heartbreak. Her second photography book was published in 2016 and was called PTSD.

She’s co-wrote and directed a short film

When she’s not in front of the camera, Julia has also been known to direct her own projects. In 2021 she released her short film Fantasy Girls which followed four teenage girls living in Reno, Nevada risking their lives by attempting to perform in a talent show while there is a kidnapper on the loose.

She used to work as a dominatrix

In 2023, Julia released her autobiography Down The Drain which recounted her extraordinary life. In an interview with The Independent, she spoke about her experience being a dominatrix at 18. “I don’t think I would be here if I hadn’t worked as a dominatrix,” she said. “The dungeon is the only place in the world that’s matriarchal – where the women rule and the men are lesser [beings].”

She continued: “It was one of the only places that made me immediately feel very safe, and kind of opened my eyes to how the world should be… how amazing it is when men are just serving women.”
