For years, fans have been calling for a drag king to be allowed on the iconic show RuPaul’s Drag Race. Well, LGBTQIA platform Revry decided to do one better. They have announced that their new show King Of Drag will be coming to screens in Spring 2025, hosted by trans actor, comedian and drag king legend Murray Hill.
The six-episode series will see some of America’s most iconic drag kings battle it out to be crowned the King Of Drag. Instead of relying on the format of previous shows that feature drag stars, King Of Drag have stated that they will “showcase drag king’s unique talents including comedy, unconventional performances, and timely commentary on masculinity, which has been part of the drag king subculture for decades.”
Speaking to Variety, Murray Hill said: “I’m so excited to be working with Revry as the host of King of Drag. I started performing in 1995, so it’s long overdue for the kings to take centre stage. This vibrant community deserves to be in the spotlight, and I’ll be their biggest hype man. I can’t wait to work with the kings and introduce them to the biggest audience possible, thanks to Revry. That’s showbiz.”
While drag queens have often been under the spotlight in the drag world, drag kings have always played a vital role in the LGBTQIA community. Stars like Stormé DeLarverie have been at the forefront of civil rights movements and speaking out against injustices.
We can’t wait to see what this new show has in store. Casting auditions are open until 5 January.
