Sky Ferreira just dropped her latest single Leash for the highly anticipated NSFW film Babygirl featuring Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson. It will be the indie sleaze darling’s first song in over two years after a lengthy campaign to #FreeSkyFerreira from her music label that was reportedly sabotaging her career.
It’s no surprise the singer chose to partner with the A24 film which encapsulates female liberation when she has fought so hard against the suffocation of her own creativity. Directed by Halina Reijn, Babygirl explores an illicit affair between a CEO and her intern who embark on a BDSM relationship. And the synth-pop track Leash perfectly embodies the feeling of leaning into your darkest desires. But there are only so many times you can listen to a song on repeat, so here are five sapphic recommendations to add to your playlist.
Siren by Kailee Morgue
Kailee Morgue is an American dark-pop singer who has gained popularity for her experimental sound which takes inspiration from 90s indie music. On this track, she embodies the sexual prowess of the Greek mythological Siren to indulge in her guilty sexual pleasures: “Love me while your wrists are bound.”
Alpha by Mariah Counts
A rising star from Los Angeles, Mariah Counts makes music for: “Crying, driving, and fucking.” And Alpha is no different, a frisky track for those who love a bit of power play. From beginning to end, Counts shares exactly how she wants you to: “Bow down.”
Body by Syd
The American singer-songwriter made her name as part of the hip-hop collective Odd Future. But now, she is carving out her own identity as a solo artist in queer soul. The seductive track is brimming with hot breathy vocals that match the beat of this mellow tune.
Altar by Dizzy Fae
With angelic vocals and hypnotic hazy instrumentals, Dizzy Fae is a rising star in the alternative R&B scene. Her music debut with the mixtape Free Form saw her explore queer love in songs like Her where she captures the feeling of falling in love with a woman for the first time. Altar is a little more mature than her early stuff, with a dance heavy beat to play when the lights get low.
She Calls Me Daddy by KiNG MALA
KiNG MALA leaves little to the imagination with this cheeky song that calls out: “Every shitty dude that has ever invalidated me or my relationships.” Threatening to steal the girls of men who mess with her, she creates a sexy funk-inspired anthem for queer women everywhere.
