Last year’s Golden Globes were incredibly queer, given how many nominations went to LGBTQIA film, TV and celebrities. In 2024, dubbed the “Year of the Lez” for its fabulous lesbian representation, we’ve continued to have incredible LGBTQIA content on our screens. So no wonder, the next Golden Globes are all set to keep the party going.
The nominations for the awards were announced today (9 December). Here’s our round-up of the LGBTQIA nominations…
Film
So many films with queer storylines and themes have been nominated for awards this year, including Emilia Pérez, which leads the nominations with a total of 10. The musical, which tells the story of a trans cartel leader who fakes their death to transition safely, has been nominated for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) and many more awards, including two nominations for Best Supporting Actress, going to Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez. The lead actress, Karla Sofía Gascón, who this year made history as the first trans woman to win Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival and European Film Awards, has once again been nominated, making her a frontrunner for an Oscar.
Other queer films that have been nominated include Challengers, which has been nominated for four awards and features a queer main character, Patrick Zweig. Memoir Of A Snail, an animated film with a gay supporting character, was also nominated for an award, as was Wicked, which features a heavily queer cast and has struck a chord with the LGBTQIA community.
Several queer celebrities have also been nominated for big awards, including Karla Sofía Gascón. Angelina Jolie has been nominated for Best Actress (Drama) for her role in Maria, while Cynthia Erivo has been nominated in the Musical or Comedy version of the same award for her portrayal of Elphaba in Wicked. Colman Domingo is up for a Best Actor award for his role in Sing Sing. In the music categories, Miley Cyrus’ song Beautiful That Way, written for The Last Showgirl, is up for Best Original Song.
There have also been a few nominations for straight celebs who have played queer roles this year. Daniel Craig is up for an award for his performance in Luca Guadagnino’s Queer, as is Denzel Washington, for his turn as bisexual baddie Macrinus in Gladiator II.
TV
The awards for television have been just as queer as the ones for film. Hacks, Baby Reindeer, Only Murders In The Building, Abbot Elementary and Ripley, all of which feature LGBTQIA characters, have all been nominated. Similarly, there have been many shows with queer casts recognised, including The Bear, Disclaimer and True Detective: Night Country.
On the celebrity front, several LGBTQIA people have been nominated for awards. This includes Emma D’Arcy, who has been nominated for their role as Rhaenyra Targaryen. Not only is Emma non-binary, but Rhaenyra became canonically queer in season two when she shared a kiss with Mysaria.
Jodie Foster has also been nominated for True Detective: Night Country. For this role, she also won an Emmy this year. Other queer celebs included in the nominations are Ayo Edebiri, Hannah Einbinder, Jessica Gunning and Andrew Scott. Selena Gomez and Kathryn Hahn have also been nominated for playing sapphic characters – Mabel in Only Murders In The Building for Selena and Agatha Harkness in Agatha All Along for Kathryn.
