Travelling to Osaka for the 2024 International LGBTQ+ Travel Association (IGLTA) Global Convention was a weeklong whirlwind of culture, connection, and celebration, with delegates from over 50 countries coming together to affirm the strength of the global LGBTQIA travel community. Osaka, with its blend of tradition, modernity, and inclusivity, proved to be the perfect host.
The opening reception set the tone, held at The Landmark Square overlooking the historic Osaka Castle. It was a breathtaking start to a convention packed with thought-provoking panels, networking sessions, and cultural experiences. These discussions emphasised the transformative power of tourism in creating a more inclusive world.
The Buyer/Supplier Marketplace was a hub of activity, representing nearly $700 million in annual business. The energy was palpable as connections formed across industries, paving the way for future collaborations. One of the most heartwarming moments was the Voyage Fundraiser at Sumiyoshi Taisha, an ancient Shinto shrine. The event raised over $80,000 to support LGBTQIA travel initiatives, underscoring the community’s commitment to advancing inclusion worldwide.

My base for the trip, the Osaka Excel Hotel Tokyu, was everything I could hope for. Centrally located in vibrant Shinsaibashi, the hotel combined luxury with convenience. From my room, the city skyline stretched out before me, a dazzling mix of old-world charm and futuristic flair.
The staff’s warmth and attentiveness made the stay even more special. Its ideal location meant I didn’t miss highlights like the Dotonbori district or the Kuromon Ichiba Market, both just a stone’s throw away.
Osaka’s Doyama District is the heart of the city’s LGBTQIA nightlife. During my visit, the Kansai Rainbow Festa brought the city alive with pride. The parade, live music, and advocacy booths created an atmosphere of joy and solidarity, a testament to Osaka’s progressive spirit.

Osaka’s rich cultural heritage, modern attractions, and dedication to inclusivity make it a standout destination. As Japan’s first city to recognize same-sex foster parents, it embodies progressive values while retaining its deep cultural roots. The city offers something for everyone – from historic sites like the Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine to vibrant modern hubs like the Umeda Sky Building.
Attending IGLTA 2024 in Osaka wasn’t just a professional highlight; it was a personal revelation. The city’s blend of tradition and innovation, coupled with its genuine embrace of diversity, left me inspired. Whether you’re planning your next big adventure or seeking a destination that feels like home, Osaka is waiting to welcome you with open arms.
