Major news, lesbians! Hayley Kiyoko’s novel Girls Like Girls is being made into a film… and she’s directing it!
The pop star and former actor is set to make a return to Hollywood but this time in the capacity of director. She will be working on an adaptation of her 2023 book, Girls Like Girls, which started life nine years ago as a song. Hayley has also written the script, alongside Stefanie Scott, who appeared in the song’s music video.
In 2023, Hayley posted about the book to Instagram, saying it was a “love letter to anyone who doesn’t believe they are worthy of being loved back”. Over a year later, she posted on the same platform that she had dreamt of this moment for nine years and “never fought so hard for anything”.
“Since I released Girls Like Girls in 2015, I’ve made a vow to myself and to you all to do everything in my power to create hopeful queer content at the largest scale possible,” she continued. “From a song, to a music video, to a book, to a feature film. WE DID IT. We will continue to create space and ignite hope.”
The film is backed by Wicked producer Marc Platt and Focus Features. Though it’s not yet clear when this film will be released, Hayley already has a lot lined up for 2025, as that’s when her second novel, Where There’s Room For Us, is set to be released.
