A global survey has revealed that over two thirds of the trans community suffer from poor mental health. VODA’s 2024 State Of Trans+ Mental Health report has shed light on the urgent mental health needs of the trans+ community.

The report surveyed over 2000 people across 75 countries. It highlighted the critical mental health challenges faced by trans people, including the prevalence of depression, anxiety and PTSD.

68% of all respondents had been diagnosed with a mental health condition. Of this number, one in six had been diagnosed with both depression and anxiety. This was often the result of gender dysphoria, anxiety about social acceptance, fear of discrimination and family rejection.

The report also found that nearly half of respondents struggled to access inclusive mental health services. The majority said they instead rely on self-help resources, with only 30% able to access in person therapy.

An overwhelming majority of participants said mental health services for the trans community should be created by trans people. 84% said this was necessary, with many highlighting the need for therapists who understand trans experiences as a reason.

“The need for specialised trans+ mental health services has never been more clear,” says Jaron Soh, founder of VODA. “This report highlights the urgency of addressing the gaps in mental healthcare, ensuring that trans+ individuals have access to compassionate and inclusive support.”

VODA is an LGBTQIA mental health organisation dedicated to supporting LGBTQIA individuals worldwide. Its online Trans+ Library is the world’s largest mental health resource and is delivered by trans therapists so that the specific challenges faced by the community are addressed.
