Babe, wake up! Agatha and Rio finally kissed on Agatha All Along. Fans have long suspected there was a romance between the two witches and this was confirmed in the finale of the Marvel miniseries. Spoilers for the show lie ahead, so be warned.

The series, which saw WandaVision villain Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) recruit a coven to walk the witches’ road and regain her powers, aired its two-part finale on Disney+ on 31 October. Throughout the show, Agatha sparred with her long-time enemy Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza), but the chemistry between the two had fans speculating about the characters’ past. In the final two episodes, this came to a head.

Episode Eight confirmed that Rio, who was also the embodiment of death, was Agatha’s former lover. Then, in a bid to sacrifice herself and save Billy (Joe Locke), Agatha plants a passionate kiss on her ex. This wasn’t just spectacularly sapphic, it was also historic as it is the first lesbian kiss in the franchise.

And the LGBTQIA Marvel fandom lost their minds. One fan wrote: “AGATHARIO KISSED AND THIS SCENE IS SIMULTANEOUSLY THE BEST AND WORST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO ME.”

Another said: “The way how Agatha touches Rio’s face and how Rio leaned in to deepen the kiss omfg SOMEBODY SEDATE ME.”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has previously found itself in hot water for its portrayal (or lack thereof) to represent the queer community in its projects. Avengers: Endgame featured one line from an unnamed character revealing they were gay. The film was highly criticised for considering the few seconds this character was on screen inclusion. Eternals featured a kiss between two men, but not only was this edited out in several countries, it was again an incredibly small part of the film. As such, Agatha All Along is not only the first lesbian kiss in the franchise but the first story to centre a queer relationship.
